Weekly water photo – 10 of 52

7 March, 2011 by Alistair

Passed over my shit pipe river today and it looked great – because all the trees have no leaves I can see lots of riffles and runs!
Only a week until I can choose not to fish for trout – I will probably fish for pike first.

Probably.

Awright Alistair,I know you guys love ur fly fishing..I do not agree with fly fishing for pike as i have seen too many die, pike are different to most other species of fish in that they are built for ambushing prey and that they use their big tails for short bursts of speed. If a pike is played for too long it builds up extreme levels of lactic acid in its body and even though when releasing the pike it looks like it has swarm away alot turn and die as they can’t recover..not saying that u shouldn’t fly fish for them but if u are then make sure that ur using tackle that u can bring the pike in and release as quickly as possible.Same goes for bait fishing for them 18lb line at least and bring in and release as quick as possible..Pike are spawning this time of year and will be tired
i know u upgrade ur tackle Ally when piking ..Just wanted to make sure others do too 🙂

    Cheers DavieC

    Davie,

I agree with your comment RE: Fly gear for Pike, but this should apply to all aspects of fishing. Use the right gear for the job for any fish irrespective of species.

Just think that in a month or two, shit pipe river will look almost like one of my favourite rivers in Denmark:
    http://blog.haumovie.dk/2009/10/30/never-say-no-to-fishing/
Fresh green leaves and nice fat browns – no pikes, though.

However we do have some great places for that, and fly fishing for Pike is practised by a small but dedicated group of slightly odd people. I’m certain their pikes don’t suffer any more than those caught on jerk, wobbler or other traditional pike-stuff.

Have to disagree with you on that Christain..Not going to start arguing all i wanted to do was point out that Pike are different to other fish in that the build up of lactic acid in their bodies can kill them if played too long as they can’t recover.. its all about education..now i remember why i stopped posting on this site..anyways tight lines Alistair..

Hey Davie – There is a bit of a Pike movement in the UK at the moment – any angler fishing for pike is recommended to use an 8 weight as an absolute minimum – in fact even that is kinda frowned upon. Personally I have two rods for Pike – a 9 weight and a 10 weight – both are heavy rods and can haul in a Pike a lot quicker than some of the guys I see using bait rods – this is mostly because when fly fishing usually I am fishing at very close quarters to the Pike and it does not get a chance to run far.

I do not think that fly fishing for pike is any worse than bait fishing for them – they both have things going for them – we are pulling fish from their natural habitat in a traumatic way – the sad fact is there are bound to be casualties.

If you are seeing Pike die from fishing for them can I suggest you change fishing partners as they are obviously doing something wrong.

Hi Davie and thanks for your comment. Nice to “meet” you.
I don’t agree that my level of education is something you are qualified to comment upon, irrespective of yours.:)

That aside, the gear used to fish pike shouldn’t has anything to do with how long the fish is played. Regardless of the species fished, as catch should be played as briefly as possible and landed as soon as possible.
I am aware of how a pike works and the mechanisms of lactic acid in muscles, but the responsible angler will surely respect the catch and act accordingly as previously mentioned.
You get people catching anything on a 2-10g UL rod with spinner, wobbler, jerks, whatever and they will surely play a catch much longer than someone using equipment matched with whatever species is targeted – be it fly or otherwise.

Alistair, it’s the same sort of thing going around here. For heavy fish, use heavy gear. Lugging a huge furball through the air with some braided steel wire will be difficult in any case if you fall short of a 9 weight.

Hey Ally i have changed fishing partners but not because of fishing practices..i have had to help out flyfishermen who do not know what they are doing when they are out fly fishing for pike mostly novices when i have been out bait fishing..they read about others fishing for them and going out for them and getting themselves into difficulty as you know i do not fly fish for anything and i think i’ve explained my reasons over the years posting on your site and my views are being upheld on that with the replys.. although i did catch my fisrt grayling on the fly this season(thanks to the flyguy who offered me a shot on the rod)..As for the replys to my posts it was more for the Anglers who are less experienced..but as per usual someones in trying to stir it up..Christain i never said anything about ur level of education ..i said its all about education..not anything about urs posted there..so i did not comment on “your level” of education..Ally its not the disagreement of posts its the way they are worded..Typical flyfishers attitude..Have a good day now xx

Ahh, Sorry. I misinterpreted your comment as an arrogant stab implying that I must be lesser educated if my opinion differs from yours.
No intention to stir – just an exchange of opinions.:) Arguing on the internet is mostly pointless.

It’s important to help out the less experienced when you spot their mistakes. Unfortunately, it’s not always well received. Particularly if it’s actually someone with much experience in doing it wrong.

Davie – how come every time someone disagrees with you it is because they are an arrogant fly fisher?

Out of the few posts that responded to you I did not actually read anything that would offend you?

Campbell agreed with you and stated everyone should use appropriate tackle and Christian thought they did nor suffer any more than any other method.

I have only ever met one other guy out fly fishing for Pike in the several years I have been doing it so for you to have met enough to give you such a negative view confuses me – and anyway an idiot is equally capable of picking up a fly rod as he is a spinning rod.

Maybe you should come with me fly fishing for them some time?

Remember the numpty dead baiting we saw Alistair that couldn’t land their fish so i had to wade in and lift it out the water. dead baiters, pluggers or fly fishermen there are numpties Amongst them all. Its just part of life, and makes it a hwole lot more interesting.
