At this time last year I was down south a bit – not far, just down in the Lake District. What I noticed at that time was the fact that it was a couple of degrees warmer and it felt like spring was about to be sprung.
One of the signs that really struck me was the sound of the woodpecker – a sound that I just love to hear as it is a true herald of spring. I love in the spring going for a wander through the woods at the back of my house and trying to find it as it drums away at a tree. Sometimes I find him and sometimes I do not.
So last year down in the Lakes I heard my first woodpecker of the year and when I came home it took at least another few weeks before I heard one up here. Sometimes I think of Spring as a bit of a wave creeping through the countryside waking everything up.
Anyway, I was out pottering about today getting ready for a trip down south for the february break away with the kids and what did I hear but a woodpecker – this has got to be one of the earliest times I have heard one since I have lived here.
A sign of an early spring perhaps?
See you wandering around listening to the birds!
