To bad boy jonjo-when was this?I’m asking because a large number of farmed salmon are still in the clyde system-were the fish fat or thin?Ithink its too early for our springers to come in-and would hate to think some bastard is doing this to kelts-what chance have you got when this is happening!!!

Yes Alistair-i noticed this, however badboyjonjo said recently, and i was wondering HOW RECENTLY-incidentally-dougie does not seem to bother much about the salmon fishings of the kelvin-so why contact him about a blantyre-clyde matter?

Ah, now the thing is - all people seem to concentrate on in the commitee meetings and the AGM is the Salmon fishing.
I took from badboyjohnjo comment that he meant recently as in the last couple of weeks. I would assume they were Kelts - shocking as it sounds !

What the heck would they do with them !

I think it’s time for one man and his dog to cast an observational eye over the holding pools tomorrow-need the exercise and fresh air!-and need to make sure no skulduggery is happening!

Alistair, mabees i need to think again about volunteering for the commitee-however i experienced the runs of escapee salmon in the leven in 98-and we were still catching farmed salmon on opening day 99.It is therfore in my experience that these could be farmed fish also.

I mind that year on the Leven - it was like carnage. You know something I think that might be what put me off Salmon fishing - some of the attitudes to other anglers was terrible. I remember minding my own business down at McKinnons point when someone actually cast over from the other side of the river and their spinner landed next to me. :/

You should give Dougie a phone, or if you want I have the Chairmans email address.

It’s a shame to hear that. All my memories of the leven are good ones-i had a cracking couple of seasons on it,but i now believe the kelvin salmon fishing to be BETTER than the levens(most fish move through the kelvin at night-so most people dont see them and believe the river is empty).I took one of my mates who pays through the nose to fish the forth/teith-and he had 2 salmon in as many hours’1 at 4lb and a silver 8pounder-both wild fish-he only had 4 in six months from the other rivers-he sportingly returned both!.

I can quite believe the salmon move through at night. In all my years trout fishing i have only seen salmon last year. I seen a few dead ones and some rolling up at the “J” pool.

Fantastic that your pal returned those Salmon- i still think that as the salmon are just starting to fully return to the Kelvin every measure should be taken to ensure they keep on returning year after year.

I think this year I might hit a few pools at night with some small tube flies and see what happens. When do you find the Sea Trout start to run ?

The earliest i have caught one was in mid april 2003(5 gramme silver toby)but the best time to see them is mid may-early june.I have observed small shoals moving through the bottom beats in low water conditions just as the light starts to fade-they are definitly sea trout-and they can clear the weir at q.m.d in one leap-far better than the salmon can!

P.S-did you get the new e-mail ad.?

  • 14 Charlie dunn // Feb 13, 2007 at 8:10 pm

Oh,i almot forgot-is it not time to start naming some of the pools and runs in the river? It has to start sometime-and the kelvinators are just the men to do it(p.s. it was me who named one of the most prolific pools years ago-and the name stuck-everybody now uses it).
