What do you get if you cross some first year art school students with some litter and a traffic cone? You get “El Conio The Magnificent” an explanation of how traffic cones end up in the River Kelvin. Oh to be a student again – it was a simpler time! One month until the start of the season and it is still very cold. I am currently wondering if the temperature is going to rise and give us a good start to the season. The first fly we should all be looking out for are “Large Dark Olives” – an absolutely lovely wee insect:
Seeing as how I do not get a spot to say my piece in the Newsletter before the AGM I thought I would post it here – also I get to say whatever the hell I want as I am no longer an office bearer – sweet! Having a baby has really affected [...] It is that time of year again – it is like a scene from Mad Max with people checking in their weapons before entering the Thunderdome - That’s right it is the River Kelvin Angling Association AGM 2010. It will be held on the 11th February at 7pm at Kessington Hall, 58 Milngavie Road Bearsden. Post Code, [...] I know some stairs that lead to a path – you get to the stairs via a busy wee side street. When I was much younger I used to hang around that street corner getting up to mischief. Now pulling my waders on beside my car feels like a bit of mischief - especially if it is a stolen couple [...] I went for a walk along the Kelvin today and was pretty shocked by two things. Firstly, it is bloody Autumn – sure I knew it was on the way however I appear to have missed the actual start of it – one moment I was looking out a pair of shorts for what we laughingly call Summer [...] (Preamble – The River Kelvin Angling Association Secretary (Paul Reid) has resigned – this started with Paul wanting anglers to cease set lining and using rod rests on the river. This was seen (I think) as a fly versus other methods vendetta (even though Paul is a metal flinging barbarian) and caused [...] For some folk a good days fishing involves a look at some flowers, casting a dry to a rising trout or two - maybe even a nip of whisky. Every inch of mono is safely put away in a pocket to be disposed of later so that the riverside is not polluted ! For others it [...] I recieved an email (no name or contact details so fair game in my book) which I found kinda puzzling: Why, you have so readily popularised fishing on river kelvin or was it inevitable, point being, banks of river even more populated by buckie swilling dope smoking idiots, fishing size 6 trebles on Sunday for brownies.
