- We had a wonderful display of Mammatus Cloud on Sunday evening – I was actually sitting on the computer and commented to my wife what a lovely light was coming in through the window – she then proceeded to tell me the clouds were starting to freak her out – I managed to eventually find my camera and take some shitty pictures that hardly do them justice!
Damn and blast – what my camera does not show is just how solid the clouds were …
Mammatus Clouds are actually fairly rare and are very ominous looking – they are like something out of a Spielberg movie as they drift across the sky looking all foreboding and broody. They are caused by sinking air and are often seen after a storm has passed although sometimes before.
Anyone else witness the show?
Yup, it really was spectacular. I got the added bonus of the Campsies as a backdrop too, just stood and watched for 20 mins. You’re right about the old school special effects!
That would look a mighty fine sight against the Campsies – there were a few folk out in their gardens taking pictures – you manage to get any?
No, I was out in the car for a couple of messages and didn’t even have my phone on me. Just pulled into a lay-by and soaked it up.
I also was out in my back garden last night too and took a couple of photos but should have left it till the sun was going down a bit more. As you said it looked like a scene from a movie (War of the Worlds). Isn’t nature wonderful and nasty. Sister-in-law lives in Point Pleasent Beach New Jersey she had the nasty side of nature the last couple of days, an earthquake 5.9 while sitting on the beach on tuesday and Hurricane Irene.
