Seemingly Scottish Canals are having a spot of bother with a pipe somewhere – essentially a blocked pipe means that not enough water is getting into the Forth n’ Clyde canal.
Paul Reid posted over on the facebook page:
So two days ago I had a call from SEPA to say they identified the Kelvin as the only feasible source for water to top up the canal, contrary to Scottish Canals own press releases that they would be taking water from multiple sources. On the call the SEPA employee could not tell me how much water they would be taking, what the current flow in the Kelvin was, what was the maximum percentage of flow they intended to take or for how long. I was told they were having a “meeting” on the banks of the Kelvin to investigate the possibility. Today I’ve seen the communication attached. No follow up call from SEPA or Scottish Canals. No explanation of how they ruled out other sources. No mention of compensation of water into the Kelvin from other sources. This matter is now with the Crown Estste and I will be reaching out to FishLegal. I’ve seen some posts insinuating that we are just disgruntled anglers and that SEPA will no best. If that is the case then why are there no numbers or facts being communicated to back up this decision. I cannot for the life of me figure out why SEPA appear to be operating as agents for Scottish Canals. That is not their job. The angling club, the CRF and the Crown Estate have all voiced their misgivings about this plan, but SEPA and Scottish Water have treated us with contempt. This is a sorry state of affairs.I sympathise with the canal anglers, and with canal users in general, but there is no excuse for the way these organisations are behaving. Scottish Canals will of course be chasing the contractor that caused this issue for compensation. If it’s the Kelvin that is paying the price, surely it’s the river that should be compensated? Not so much as a call to say they were going ahead. Disgraceful
Not just disgraceful – utterly outrageous – they want to take water from the Kelvin…
..and put it into the canal despite the association and the River Clyde Foundation having significant misgivings!
