I found myself with that most satisfying time when I had a spare few hours this afternoon – boys were at various parties and out with friends so I was able to get a rod out and wave it around for a while.
Obviously with a little heat in the air I wanted to go after trout (river) however as I only had a short window decided to hit my local sea trout mark instead. Seeing as how I already had a spinning rod set up in the garage it was simply a matter of sticking it in the boot of the car and then heading to spot.
Spinning with a toby was the order of the day, I couldn’t be arsed getting the fly gear out and started working my way along the shoreline. After a few casts I received a few follows which spurred me on and then nothing for another 50 yards or so until I caught the first of the day – on the wee spinning rod it gave a great wee account of itself and swam off angrily obviously to tell its pals as there was no others for another hundred yards. The 2nd was a little smaller than the first – kinda fluked it as I spotted it chasing the toby at the last second and then it pounced so it just thrashed around on the surface for a bit before I managed to get the hook out and it flapped its way back to the water.
I started to work my way back to my starting point – working my way quite close to the drop off when a porpoise broke the surface around 20m away from me – it gave me quite the fright.
I tried to keep my camera on the water to get another photo, however it came up again maybe around 150m away and I was not quick enough. It was truly awesome.
I thought the fishing would be goosed however I landed the biggest one of the day in a deepish bay and with that it was time to head back home to watch some rugby and then have a BBQ.
Next trip – a midweek river trip.
See you on the river with the fly rod!
