Sadly the Gods of the Pike have been absent from my life as of late – my last two sessions have left me decidedly humbled and today’s session was even worse – it rained. I thought things were looking up as David Wolsoncroft-Dodds emailed me the other day – seemingly a reader of this diary was guided by him and they mentioned I plugged his book – this one:
Anyway I was kinda hoping that some of that magic had worn off via email however the green beasts failed to show up. As we were packing up I met a pal of a pal Al Pyke and his buddy who were just tackling up – with usual tact and honesty I moaned “It was bloody awful, we did not even see a fish and then two guys showed up who chucked a couple of herrings at us”*
It was only later I realised how I would feel if some bastard had just told me the fishing was pish and I would be better staying at home earning some brownie points. If you are reading this Al I hope you caught some monsters!
Yes – quite!
*not that I have anything against the herrings or people that throw them!
Another fine summer day in bonnie Scotland! Sorry you blanked, but you can console yourself knowing that you have the attention of celebrities! I hope he is sending you a copy of his book, it really is a terrific read.
Nah – he said he did not have any, he was gonna send me a couple of his dvd’s though and have a natter on the phone though. I read all his stuff in Fly fishing and fly tying and thought it was pretty hot – in fact it was his advice in the magazine that was my bible when I first fished for the beasts!
You been out much?
Sadly I have not been out for weeks. Have been very busy at work and the wife seems to fill the weekend diary with all sorts. Not to mention that my daughter has just started crawling and has become even more of a handful! Fishing has slipped further down the to-do list than usual! I am managing to fit in a sneaky couple of casts for mackerel after work, but that’s about it. Will give you a loan of the book if you want, assuming we ever coincide at the fly tying evening. Not sure when the next one is, have you any idea?
I can never remember – Paul is the best person to ask – I should actually be able to make it along to the nights over the winter so at some point I can get it off you (the book)
🙂
We were unlucky on Saturday with the Pike. Everything looked so promisiung when we arrived, especially after I had a go at a fish and you had a good take ! Then, nothing !! It certainly hasn’t put me off , and I ‘d love to have another go at them before the winter sets in. I did, however, manage a lovely 8lb salmon from the K in the afternoon, fought like a tiger !
Unlucky with the pike guys ..well done on the Salmon Alan
Thanks for commenting Davie!
