I had a weird dream last night. I dreamt I turned up at a favourite spot on a river and there was a tackle shop on the edge of the stream, not a dingy one but one that was full of important looking people in Orvis and Sage shirts – people that looked like they knew what they were doing. There were rows and rows of expensive looking rods and a stags head on the wall (strangely there was an inflatable comedy sized guitar in the corner of the room but it was a dream so made perfect sense at the time).
They were charging around £100 for a days fishing with a guide – and there was lots of people who professed to be experts on this particular river. I only wanted to fish I told them – however I was told there would be no way I would catch a trout as I did not have the specific fly that all the guides were using that week.
I looked at the river where I once found solitude and watched rows upon rows of anglers all casting with the same fly.
I went home.
Any dream with fly fishing “experts” in it qualifies as a nightmare.
Any time i venture away from the hills to fish i am bombarded by “experts”. “experts” are boabies.
Boabies…. HaHaHaHa Magic
Alistair, i think i can guess which patiular spot your dream was about. If your dream did come true at this spot it would be a true nightmare. I reckon we can just be thankfull that the kind of senario you describes rarely happens in Scotland and long may that contiue to be the case. I’ve heard that this kind opf situation is all too common on some of the better trout streams across the pond.
Cheap plentiful fishing – it is something that we should not take for granted – emanualle was telling me his local river requires a written application about your fishing history and then if you are approved a 7 year waiting list i son the cards. At the end of that a joining fee of £800 plus your yearly £800 is then due (Tom that is around $1500)
Makes you wonder!
Alistair
Really do need to ask though – what was the fly they were all using and any chance of a “step by step” on how to tie it?
Peter
Thanks for a wonderful blog – always entertaining!
Peter – it was probably something complicated with legs, nothing really made sense.
Dave – thanks for the positive comment, I see you go after Pike on the lure, you ever go after them on the fly ?
Alistair
Alistair – Yes I do but mainly after the small Jacks in the summer months on smaller streamer type flies around the weeds. I find fly fishing great when there is loads of weed growth as you can skim your fly over the top of the weeds where a lure would keep getting snagged!
I also fly fish for perch in the summer months just using reservoir trout flies which can be good fun.
glad to see im not the only one! haha
This is a bit weird. Just this past weekend I was fishing behind a fly shop with a bunch of people and the shop owner came out and told me I wouldn’t be able to catch fish with the fly I was using….
Murdock – and I bet you have never seen them fish ?
True Alistair…he gave me advice which I tied on as the bottom fly of a dropper rig with my selection as the top fly. Hooked a fish shortly after ….on the top fly of the dropper rig. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I’d been catching them on big ugly buggers all day in his “midge river”.
Classic !
