We spent a lot more time gabbing than we did fishing.
The plan was to hit the river at dusk by staking out a long pool and then fishing until it was properly dark, however there was already an angler who had got to the pool before us. The old timer was simply sitting and waiting and must have had a wry smile on his face as he listened to us beating our way through the undergrowth.
In fact he did say something like “were you fighting in the bushes” and then went back to surveying his 100m long pool.
We walked further down the river spooking big trout and reminiscing as we went – we had a few casts to some rising trout and then I moved on to a wooly bugger. First go down the pool and a trout took it and was then away again. That was probably the best trout action i had the whole session.
The best bit was probably watching the satellites flying above our heads and seeing an absolutely spectacular shooting star. It turned out that it was probably the start of the Perseids meteor shower – probably one of the brightest shooting starts I have ever seen.
