Testing a new layout…

I know this is a little boring, especially if you guys are reading this via email however I am testing out my new theme – I would like some comments.

I have also been thinking about adding a very simple forum. I was actually loathe to do this as I dont think it will get used much however I am not egocentric enough to realise that some people might want to chat about other things than stuff I write about. I also dont want you guys to bugger off to a forum and not comment anymore :-)

Let me know what you think and I will activate it if you like in a few days.

Sounds like a good idea Alistair ….Sometimes I know I want to say something but it’s not clear where I should say it as it doesn’t really relate to anythting already on your Blog ..well not recently anyway ..so i just have to slot it in somewhere ..alternatively you could keep it as it is with you starting topics but also have a “miscellaneous” topic that anyhting that didn’t relate got put in there …..Is there also a way of adding pics rather than links to hosting services like Photobucket …AND..is there any way that links can avoid needing to be moderated if posted by “trusties” ..:-)

  • Essentially, If I added the forum everyone would have to register to post in it – you would also be registering to post comments and they would not get held in moderation. I can activate a way for pictures to be uploaded to my space here if people want to show em’ off :-)

Otherwise – what you think of my new theme?

I like it, for my personal taste the theme is an improvement. The important part .. and what keeps people coming back .. is what you write rather than what the place looks like, but looking good aint gonna hurt anything.
On the forum idea, it could be cool. Stuart B’s suggestion about a misc topic would be a good alternative if a forum was going to put you out of pocket, the only problem with that is it might get quite hard to follow as time goes on because of it’s linear nature but it would do a job.
Pictures, Nick at SS was going to activate picture posting there but with his set up it was going to increase his bandwith a lot and put a big rise on his running costs. I don’t know if your set up would miss out on that problem but it might be worth investigating.

  • Looks first class. Problem is, if you keep updating it, no one’s going to believe you were the first fly fishing blog anymore. Maybe go back to a simple black background with no pictures and large green type?

  • Jim – I am suprised that people come back in the first place :-) I dont think the amount of traffic here would really give me a bandwith problem – hmmmm, I could open a page for random comments I suppose. Or I could show everyone how to post pictures in the comments section (it is possible).

Pete – you only have to check the archives ;-)

    good idea

  • Jolyon

Looks good. Only caveat is the shopping trolley, though appreciate this may be an ironic tip of the hat to what you might sometimes find in the Kelvin ;-)

  • C Stewart

    New format looks good.

A small forum is a good idea too for Kelvin focused discussion (i presume?).

You scratched that pike itch yet? I may head out tonight if it dosn’t wazz it down.

    Campbell

  • jolyon – Yup – the shopping trolley is in honour of all urban (or not so) rivers.

C Stewart – i am off after the Pike tonight on Loch Lomond :-)

  • The River Leven in Fife is also good for shopping trolleys, a nice varied mix of species too, Morrisons is the predominant species, however there has been reports of the odd Asda trolley also. These are obviously migratory as the nearest Asda is about 6 miles away.

But back to the actual topic:
The new theme looks nice, I find the white background a little heavy on the eyes after a while but i suppose thats just personal taste.

I do like the new set up Alistair, but I have one minor gripe. Since the changeover I have been unable to get your blog to load up on my Blackberry, thus leaving me with no option but to participate in the mundain meetings I am forced to attend. Although my contributions to the meetings have resulted to a 20% increase in sales, and following from that I have been promoted twice, I feel that this does not compensate for the lack of daily Kelvin banter! I am also forced to use a laptop to catch up on all the news – what’s that about? If someone has a fix that will help me get back to avioding work and computers in general, it would be greatfully recieved.

  • Hmmm, tricky one Paul – Two things you can do I reckon – you can sign up to the blog via email(top left corner) or you can sign up via the RSS reader – I am sure the old blackberry has an RSS reader :-)

If you keep going the way you are you will be in charge of the place with real responsibilities – before you no it you will be running the place with no free time whatsoever !!

  • Hi Alastair,
Just a comment for your open forum…do you guys think that this credit crunch will put the hems on many of the rainbow trout fisheries? Personally I would like to see a few of them go out of business as that ones that I am thinking of (but wont make public) are awful and ran by weirdos who are often angry when you catch more fish that they want you to. Another hope is that kids or/and beginners will begin looking at what I would deem as proper angling re for our natural brown trout and show a willingness to learn the hows and whys. I know that this might sound a little unpolitically correct but thats how I tend to view these holes in the ground fisheries.
    Cheers
    Roddy

  • Roddy – you should go and post that in the forum
    http://urbanflyfisher.com/forum/
More people will see it there!
