Hello all,

I'm new to fishing the Kelvin and until Friday last week I'd been enjoying grand sport catching brownies on the dry fly through July and August, my best being about a pound at the stretch just downstream of Gibson Street in Kelvingrove Park. Last Friday I'd set off with my usual set up expecting the water to be down since I'd seen it in spate on the Wednesday. It was still comparitively big and dirty to what I'd become accustomed to so I tied on a wee Allys Shrimp treble and decided to have a crack at the alleged salmon (I'd not seen one since I got my permit earlier in the summer)! Despite not touching any that morning I saw several salmon moving between the park and the botanic gardens and was finally convinced they were there. This was reinforced when I met a salmon fisherman who showed me pictures of his salmon so far this season and advised me they were there for the taking. Inspired, I returned yesterday morning with my spinning rod. I hooked and lost a fish of about 7-8 lb at the bit just behind the old band stand within an hour of starting! I continued upstream stopping at likely looking spots but had no further luck. I got to the weir just below Queen Margaret Drive and the chap I'd met on the Friday was there attempting to remove the tree that's stuck above the weir. As I was standing on the bank recounting my mornings exploits to him while he wrestled with rope and grappling hook to dislodge the tree there was a sudden commotion as several policemen and firemen with rescue equipment charged down the path towards us. Apparently some do gooder had phoned the police to report a drunk on a log in the river! Not receiving the expected apology for the misunderstanding this civic minded and environmentally responsible citizen was astounded to be threatened with being arrested for breach of the peace! Have Strathclyde Police not got anything better to be doing? I've never seen anything like it in my life! The alleged crook was more appropriately equipped for river rescue (eg with chest waders and ropes etc) than any of his potential recuers! The whole debacle ended up with 6 police officers and 2 fire crews present. I dread to think of the cost to the public purse. As one outraged bystander noted, it was the ultimate triumph of stupidity over common sense and a sign of the times….Are the Friends of the River Kelvin also under surveillance for criminal wading? Before his apprehension he'd managed to poach two bikes, a shopping trolley, a steel table and a set of step ladders! Charlie I salute you sir. If I were you I'd have demanded my arrest to give the procurator fiscal a bit of a laugh at the expense of Strathclyde Police. And I hope you've gone back in and got that bloody tree out…

Rant over!

Tight Lines Everyone! x

Hi “theswami”

What a great first post ! - I take it that you must be referring to that lovable rogue “Charlie D” - now that is one calamity I wished I could have seen - Charlie with his grappling hook eyeing up the best Salmon pools and the key stone cops coming to arrest him - Charlie likes an argument I hope he stood up for himself!

Made my day that did!

If you see him tell him to drop by - we need him to answer salmon questions in the forum!

theswami…….Welcome to NuLab's NuWorld .  What you say doesn't surprise me in the least( Didn't you know that there is no crime in Strathclyde and the Polis need to find something to fill their time )   and it's going to get worse if some  have their way. Stories abound in a couple of Usenet Newsgroups that I sub to about what goes on in our PC Land .  We already have PCSO's  acting like the proverbial and now within the past few days we have this nonsensical suggestion about giving Cooncil workers the right to impose on -the-spot penalties for all sort of misdemeanours .

No Campbell it regretfully wasn't me ferreting in the bushes and I've not had the fly rod out since I lost that salmon. By the way if anyone catches one with a large jointed rapala  hingin fae its beak I'd appreciate the lure back, it cost a pretty penny. I've been back three times since the last post but only had a wee trout on a mepps. The problem with this spinning cerry on is the amount of spinners I've lost (probably on submerged step ladders that are illegal to remove) and a man of my means can't keep going on like this. The only reason I'd resorted to using an enormous plug that day was that I'd lost every other lure in my bag except said ridiculous beast I'd bought for a trip to Loch Awe a couple of years ago and never used since. However the floating rapala, which I lost in the jaws of a fish, remains the only lure of the twelve I've used so far which isn't currently residing on the bottom of the kelvin so I 'll maybe get another one. Or  maybe I should return to the far less costly pass time of fly fishing. How is the trout fishing in September? I cant say I've seen much rising recently but I've very much had salmon on my mind

Aye!,a truly bizarre incident indeed,as i was in the middle of the weir,i noticed all the commotion on the bridge at q m d-two police cars, and two fire engines,as well as a rammy of onlookers-and started looking around to see where the :accident:was. Not until they came scurrying down did i realise these idiots had come to rescue me,and when i told them i obviously did not need rescued-i was then told that if i did not leave the water,i would then be arrested and charged with breach of the peace!.Oh and the old guy who shouted to the plods”its a triumph for stupidity over commonsense”was also threatened by our heroic boys in blue with the jail!-the tree remains,to reach out its spindly branches-and remove us of our lures!

That's disgraceful language Andy - To be honest I am shocked at your attitude!

In all my days I have never heard the filth being spoken about in such a disrespectful way.

It might surprise you,but i was very polite with our local jobbies, but only because there was a good shoal of grilse sitting above the weir(thats why i was trying to clear the pool)-in fact as soon as plod an fireman sam pissed off,i set up with a ten gram silver toby, and hooked a cracking silver grilse of about 6lbs!old john(wee marks old man-usually fishes the tree pool)was standing beside me as i played it,and i nearly had it but it found a cracking ledge to cut me on!unfortunately it took the lure,so i took a tntrum like a big girlYell.
