Well, here goes………………
About 8 weeks ago I had a good day on this water catching 6 fish including a 16 and 22 pounder. A couple of weeks later, a friend of mine had asked about the possibility of having a day out in order that he could catch his first Pike.
The conditions were fairly good, a nice breeze and overcast - not too cold. The original drift that I had in mind wasn't possible as it was occupied so we searched with the finder for some likely looking features. I opted for my Guideline intermediate with a type3 sinking tip with a silver sparkler fly and set up my boat partner with a similar approach but with a Bucktail Deceiver. First fish of the day came fairly quickly to my rod - a sprightly 4 pounder that fought well above it's weight. Mark soon followed me with his first ever Pike - I think it's safe to say that he was delighted.
At around lunchtime I hit a 13 pounder which fought extremely hard but giving it plenty of teddy with my powerful rod and 25lb leader, it was soon subdued. This was a beautiful fish and Mark remarked at how big she looked. Mark promptly switched over to a sparkler and hit his second fish of the day which put a healthy bend into his 9 weight Sage.
So we had 5 fish to the boat and headed of to fish another drift for the last hour or so. I let my intermediate count down to about 20 and began a slow, jerky retrieve to really get that flashabou fly pulsing. After about 5 seconds I had a solid thump followed by a heaviness as the fish took. It stayed deep and didn't do much as I pumped it towards the boat. It broke the surface…%%&&***$$£££”!!!!!!!!! “We're into a big fish here!” I exclaimed as I saw it's tail swirl. The fish then woke up and went on a searing run cutting through the waves like a torpedo before pounding down deep again and under the boat. That couple of minutes seemed like an eternity as she battled in the clear water. After a short but sensational battle, Mark netted her for me.
The unhooking mat was ready in the bottom of the boat as I lifted her in. The single hook popped out and weighed - the Avons were bouncing around the 27lb mark - what a fish - both of us just sat speechless for a few moments after her release. We agreed that it had been a successful trip!!!!
