6 days to go….

6 days to go before the broonie (thats brown trout to my US cousins)  season starts.

The weather forecast is for rain for the next few days making sure we will all be gazing miserably at swollen rivers…..

YEP and i cant wait! Going to the river tummel for the first time at the end of the month.
Anyone with any tips feel welcome to throw them my way

  • The usuall, take plenty of olives – fish parachute style if you dont like bugging and be prepared to switch to true dry fly if you see rising fish – expect a hatch at around 12-2 roughly. If it rains all day make sure you have a flask of coffee ;-)

I’ve had some success on the Tummel with some wee yellowish hare’s ear nymph type things. Spiders seem to work well too. Actually, lots of things seem to work quite well on the Tummel.

If you’re wading, be careful of sharply rising water levels, or stepping off a rock into deep water. The current does shift a bit, so a wading stick is a good idea.

Thanks guys. Ill be taking quite a few nymphs nd bugs as the water is quite high. Was speaking to a guy who works in qualys(formally mitchells) of pitlochry and he says there is already fish rising so hopefully will get a go at proper dry fly fishing

    hiya,

Don’t think I’ll be venturing onto the Kelvin on the first day, but hopefully by the end of the month.

As for rising fish, I saw a belter of a trout rising at Queen Margaret drive, just as the water was lowish before more rain.
